Plastic finger splint ideal for finger injuries. Have you ever thought about how you can get injured if you try to catch a ball coming towards you and it hits your fingertips? The answer lies in the thin tendon that extends the finger, and which can break if stretched more than normal. After injury the terminal phalanx (nail) of a finger remains in partial flexion and cannot be fully extended.
There are also cases where the tendon is detached together with a piece of bone from the phalanx. Patients with neglected ruptures may develop stiffness and deformity. The rupture (i.e., interruption of continuity) of the extensor tendon results in, in addition to the fall of the phalanx, pain, swelling, and hematoma that may be below the nail. In some cases there is detachment of the nail.
